The Ministry of Marine and Fishery and publicly listed general mining firm PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (Antam) have signed an agreement to improve the welfare of people on Gebe Island in North Maluku where the firm has nickel mining operations.

The projects to be developed under the cooperation will be the utilization of marine and fishery resources in the Gebe seawaters, Antam said in a statement.

The accord was signed on Wednesday by the secretary general of the Ministry of Marine and Fishery Resources Andin H. Taryoto and Antam president director Deddy Aditya Sumanagara.

Antam has planned to stop its nickel mining operations in Gebe in 2005 due to nickel reserve depletion. The company, which is majority owned by the government, started commercial operation on the island in 1979. (robert/leo)
