The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is currently finalizing a new regulation on the management of flare gas from oil and gas fields in the country to help reduce emissions.
This was said by Director General of Oil and Gas at the ministry IGN Wiratmaja Puja on Wednesday.
He said that the new regulation will help encourage the utilization and commercialization of flare gas potentials in the country, estimated at around 200 mmscfd.
He said that the government will open data on the country?s flare gas potentials to other industries and entrepreneurs planning to process the gas into other economically valuable products.
IDX-listed oil and gas services company PT Elnusa Tbk unveiled last year a flare gas utilization project in Louise field within the Sangasanga field, East Kalimantan, operated by PT Pertamina EP (PEP). Elnusa plans to process the flare gas into electricity. The company also said it plans to develop flare gas potential in four locations in South Sumatra and Riau provinces as part of strategy to diversify into power plant business.
