The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) said PT Pertagas Niaga, a subsidiary of state-owned gas distribution company PT Pertamina Gas, has on Wednesday (04/11) started flowing natural gas in stages to 5,062 household connections (SRs) in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan.

The city gas network project, which is funded by the 2020 State Budget, is developed by Directorate General for Energy and Mineral Resources of the MEMR.

In the first phase, the contractor Pertagas Niaga started flowing gas to six villages in Sungai Parit, Penajam sub-district, Penajam Paser Utara Regency, East Kalimantan province.

In 2019, the government has installed 4,260 SR units in Penajam Paser Utara, therefore, as of today, 9,322 households have been connected with the city gas network (Jargas) program.

In the second phase, Pertagas Niaga will transmit gas to a number of villages, namely Giri Mukti, Giri Purwa, Sidorejo, Lawe, Petung, and  Waru. The gas transmitted to Penajam Paser Utara is taken from gas field projects owned by PT Pertamina Hulu Kalimantan Timur at a volume of 0.2 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd).

President Director of Pertagas Niaga (PTGN) Linda Sunarti said in a statement that the distribution of gas to household consumers, including to consumers in East Kalimantan, is part of the company's efforts to reduce the imports of LPG. "Natural gas which is used for the city gas network has low pressure and density, so that besides being economical, people can also feel safer when cooking," Linda said.
