The people of Oneputejaya and Bohomatepe villages, in Morowali regency, Central Sulawesi, have asked for land compensation of Rp 40 million per hectare from nickel miner PT Internasional Nikel Corporation (PT Inco), the Koran Tempo newspaper reported in its Thursday edition.
These villages are located in the INCO's minig operations' area. The issue was raised by the two villages' leaders during a meeting wiith Central Sulawesi provincial authorities and members of PT Inco in Palu on Wednesday.
A villager, Nuukmin, said there was an agreement in 2000 on several issues like PT Inco must not operate in the area until it pays land compensation. But the company operates normally.
PT Inco's external director Edi Suhardi said the payment of land compensation will not solve the problem. He did not provide further explanations.(*)
