Most of industries in E. Java heed new electricity tariffs

The majority of industries in East Java receive the new electricity tariffs and pay their electricity bills according to the new tariffs.

The head of state electricity firm PT PLN's East Java branch, Budi Harjanto, said that PLN's East Java had a total 16 big customers falling in the I-4 tariff category and 1,156 customers in the I-3 category.

The value of electricity bills, according to the new tariffs, of the 1,156 customers total Rp 165.5 billion per month. But Budi did not disclose how much the value of electricity bills of the 16 big customers. He only revealed that the largest customer was PT Semen Tuban, with monthly electricity bill of Rp 7.9 billion. And this company paid their bills on time.

Budi acknowledged that a few of his big customers - 11 companies -- could not yet pay electricity bills according to the new tariffs. However, after negotiations with PLN, nine of them agreed to pay their unpaid bills through installment.

The nine companies are PT Tristate Textile, PT Wastra Indah, PT Industri Soda, PT Segoro Fiberindo, PT Segoro Ekomulyo, PT Jaya Kertas, PT Jatim Taman Steel, PT Surya Kertas and PT Samator.

While the other big companies that were still negotiating the tariffs with PLN included PT Ispat Indo (Surabaya) and PT Hanil Jaya (Surabaya).

Budi said although electricity tariffs were increased by up to more than 100 percent of big businesses, demand for PLN electricity continued to increase. PLN recorded a new electricity supplies of 46 MVA to 44 companies, and 21MVA additional supplies to some companies.

"As of January, 2001, no single company in East java will reject the implementation of the new electricity tariffs," Budi said. (*)
