The Muara Badak area in East Kalimantan wants to become a new separate regency from the Kutai Kertanegara regency, the local Kaltim Post daily reported.

In a visit by Kutai Kertanegara Regent Syaukani HR to the Muara Badak area to launch the community development project sponsored by oil and gas firm Vico, the local people openly expressed their demand through a banner, which was put beside the welcoming banner.

Spokesman for the Muara Badak people Faisal was quoted by the paper as saying that the people had long demanded the area to become a separate regency and to have its own administration.

Faisal said that the Muara Badak area had sufficient human and natural resources to support the area to become a separate regency.

"There is no reason to say that our demand is irrational," Faisal said. (*)
