The Onur Sultan 240 MW marine vessel power plant (MVPP), which arrived in Medan, North Sumatra, on May 21, has started commercial operation since June 15.

State-owned electricity firm PT PLN said in a statement on Monday that the MVPP is a short-term measure to resolve the power shortage problem in the northern part of Sumatra (Sumbagut) region which covers North Sumatra and Aceh provinces.

PLN said that the commercial operation of the Onur Sultan MVPP, leased by PLN for five years from Turkey-based floating power plant maker Karpowership, will increase installed capacity in the Sumbagut system to 2,223 MW compared to peak load of 1,558 MW in North Sumatra and 355 MW in Aceh, thus increasing the power reserves in Sumbagut to 310 MW.

The MVPP, having a length of 300 meter and width 50 meter, has diesel-fuel power machine (PLTD) made by Wartsila at the capacity of 18.81 MW per unit with a total of 24 units, and coal-fired power machines at the capacity of 2x15 MW.
