Japan?s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development (NEDO) and a five-party consortium - consisting of Toyota Motor Corporation, Hino Motors, Ltd., Toyota Tsusho Corporation, Toho Gas Engineering Co., Ltd., and the Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) - will begin a demonstration project to develop a sustainable transportation system.

NEDO said in a statement obtained Friday that the project will include infrastructure construction to disseminate compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles in Indonesia.

NEDO said this demonstration project will promote the construction of infrastructure to supply quality fuel that meets international standards, by furthering the installation of CNG stations and the introduction and use of CNG vehicles in the Jakarta metropolitan area and nearby industrial parks. These CNG stations and CNG vehicles will use Japanese technology. In addition, NEDO hopes to encourage energy conservation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Moreover, NEDO said it has agreed to conduct a demonstration project for developing a societal system to expand the use of CNG in Indonesia. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with Directorate General of Oil and Gas (MIGAS) at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia on December 11.

Simultaneously, the consortium will sign a service contract with NEDO as well as an implementation document (ID) with Pertamina, Indonesia?s state-owned oil company, to work together to promote the project.
