New coal-fired power plant to be developed in Berau

A new 2x50 MW coal-fired power plant is planned to be developed in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan Province, to help increase electricity supply in the region, a local report said on Thursday.

Berau Muharram visited the 3x142 MW PLTU Celukan Bawang coal-fired power plant in Bali earlier this week following invitation by the project?s investor, which will also build the planned 2x50 MW coal-fired plant in Berau, Berau Post reported. ?Before investing (in Berau), the investor asked me to visit their PLTU in Bali,? Muharram said.

The PLTU Celukan Bawang, which started operation in 2015, is majority owned by China Huadian Engineering Co Ltd, with partners including Merryline International Pte Ltd and PT General Energy Indonesia,

Muharram said he was impressed with technology of the PLTU Celukan Bawang. He hopes that planned 2x50 PLTU project in Berau could be realized.

He said that the administration plans to hold a meeting with the investor along with other companies including state-owned electricity firm PT PLN, local coal miner PT Becaue Coal, and PT Indo Pusaka Berau, which operates the PLTU Lati coal-fired power plant in Berau, to discuss the planned new power plant project.
