New mining firm to begin exploration in West Nusa Tenggara

PT Multi Tekmindo, a new mining company in Dompu regency, Sumbawa island, West Nusa Tenggara, will soon begin its exploration activities, becoming the second mining firm to operate on the island after PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara, Koran Tempo reported on Monday .

Speaking to reporters in Mataram last week, the regent of Dompu, Abu Bukar Ahmad, said that PT Multi Tekmindo would produce manganese and black tin in cooperation with the local government.

According to the regent, the company which is expected to be able to produce between 10 tons and 20 tons of black tin ores per day. “The manganese and black tin will be exported to South Korea, Japan and Singapore,” he said.

PT Multi Tekmindo, which will operate under a 19-year contract of works beginning 2004, will be the second mining company to operate in the Sumbawa island after PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara.

Several other companies including PT Dhani Tama Niaga Prima and PT Artha Gemilang, PT Puku Apu have obtained mining licenses to operate in Sumbawa but they have not yet begun their exploration activities. (*)
