New US$10m mining project to start in HSU district, S. Kalimantan

A new U$10 million steel ore mining project will soon be opened in the Hulu Sungai Utara (HSU) district in South Kalimantan, according to local Regent Suhailin Muchtar.

Suhailin was quoted by the local Banjarmasin Post daily as saying on Thursday that the investors from Jakarta and South Korea would sign the investment agreement with the HSU administration early next month.

He explained that under the agreement, the investors must implement community development program and recruit most of its workers from the local area.

He said that the investors agreed to hire local people for working in the mining project. He said that around 1,000 workers would be recruited.

Elsewhere, Suhailin said that the HSU administration also planned to develop a power generating unit by taking advantage of the coal potential in the area. He did not provide details.(*)
