Newmont’s Batu Hijau workers on strike, production affected

Copper and gold miner PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT), a unit of Denver-based giant mining firm Newmont Mining Corp confirmed that its workers went on strike Thursday and had affected production.

Kasan Mulyono, NNT’s spokesperson when contacted by Petromindo.com on Friday confirmed the strike and admitted that production process had been affected, but he did not give further detail.

“We are preparing a formal statement about the matter, which will be released within a few hours,” said Kasan.

Reports said that hundreds of NNT’s workers went on strike Thursday over overtime pay dispute.

The mine is producing some 650 million pounds of copper and 600,000 ounces of gold annually.(godang)
