PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara, one of the two mining subsidiaries of the United States-based Newmont Corporation, has provided about Rp 2 billion (1US$=Rp 8,500) in cash for the construction of a junior high school in Sekongkang, near its mining site in the Jereweh district in West Nusa Tenggara province (NTB).
The company said that the donation for the construction of the school was channeled through the YPESB foundation owned by the local government. Newmont has earlier provided financial assistance for the construction of kindergarten and elementary schools also in Sekongkang.
The Newmont Mining Corporation has two subsidiaries in Indonesia, namely the Newmont Minahasa Raya (NMR) in North Sulawesi and PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) in Nusa Tenggara. Both are involved in gold and copper mining.
The Newmont Nusa Tenggara started its commercial production earlier this year and has provided jobs for thousands of workers. (*)
