A North Sulawesi district court acquitted PT Newmont Minahasa Raya, a local unit of US gold miner Newmont Mining Corp., and a U.S. executive of charges they violated pollution laws in Buyat Bay, North Sulawesi.
Richard Ness, president director of a now-closed mine, and PT Newmont Minahasa Raya were found not guilty of polluting a bay with mercury and arsenic, Presiding Judge Ridwan Damanik told the court in Manado Tuesday.
Newmont opened the North Sulawesi gold mine in 1996 and closed the site after the last ore was processed in August 2004. (*)
