Gold and copper mining firm in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara province, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) has gradually reduced if foreign workers, according to company external affairs manager Robert Humberson.

Robert was quoted by the Denpasar-based Bali Post daily as saying that the number of foreign workers had declined from 300 during the company's construction stage to the current number of 175.

He said that the company would only use foreign workers if local resources could not fill in the specified skill and expertise needed.

He added that the company's priority was to use local people.

Robert denied reports that the company was employing foreign workers illegally. He said that such a move would only cause difficulties to the company.

He said that all of the company's foreign workers had been employed through the existing legal procedure.

NNT has been facing strong pressure to provide more jobs for the local people. But the company has said that the number of applicants had been much greater than the available jobs. (*)
