Newmont hands over four school buildings to Sumbawa govt

Copper and gold mining company PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) handed over four school buildings to the Sumbawa regency administration as part of the company?s contribution to help develop local human resources.

The company said in a press release obtained on Friday that the four elementary school buildings were located in four villages in Sumbawa regency including Benete village, Sekongkang Atas, Sekonkang Bawah, and Tongo Sejorong.

Previously, the company had also provided scholarships for 20 Sumbawa best performing senior high school students to continue their studies in universities in Surabaya, East Java.

As of July 2001, NNT has provided scholarships to some 1,250 students.

NNT operates mine sites in Nusa Tenggara province. The company is 56.25 percent owned by U.S.-based mining group Newmont Mining Corp., 35 percent by Sumitomo Corporation of Japan, and the remaining 20 percent by Indonesia?s PT Pukuafu Indah.

NNT has a target to produce some 320 million-350 million pounds of copper, and 260,000 ounces of gold this year.(*)
