Gold miner PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (NMR), an 80 percent subsidiary of Denver based miner Newmont Corp. said on Tuesday that it had stopped mining in North Sulawesi but would continue to process the gold ore until the company closed entire operations in late 2003.
?We have stopped mining activities in North Sulawesi last October and now we are processing 2,000 tons of ore per day from our stockpile,? Yonaniko Salim, Newmont Indonesia unit spokesperson told Petromindo.com.
Meanwhile, an NMR senior official said that all NMR mining contractors had left the mining site.
Newmont plans to close its North Sulawesi mine in December 2003 due to resource depletion.
According to Newmont?s quarterly report, NMR is set to produce 320,000 ounces of gold in 2001. (godang)
