Copper and gold mining firm PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) recently awarded scholarships to 30 university students and the best high school graduates from Sumbawa Island in Nusa Tenggara Province for the 2002-2003 academic year.

The high school graduates, 17 in all, will use scholarship funds from PTNNT to continue their education at universities in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the remaining 13 students are pursuing their education at different universities in the country.

?The scholarships show PTNNT?s concrete participation in the improvement of human resources development in Nusa Tenggara,? said company Senior Manager of External Relations Robert Humberson.

In August, PTNNT awarded scholarships to 430 secondary school and university students from all regencies in West Nusa Tenggara.

The company, which operates a gold mine in Sumbawa, is one of Indonesia?s major copper and gold miners. It is majority owned by U.S. mining giant Newmont Mining Corporation, while other shareholders are Sumitomo Corporation of Japan and an Indonesian company, PT Pukuafu Indah. (robert/leo)
