West Nusa Tenggara's copper and gold mining company PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) said that its waste material tailing disposal pipe cracked on Monday afternoon with a diameter of around 2 centimeter, a company press statement said.
The Astaga.com online quoted the statement as saying that the leaking tailing waste material was temporarily retained in a special container located near the pipeline in a closed area.
The company said that a new pipeline would arrive in March, and the company would install it in April. The company said that tailing disposal would be halted in the month to allow the installation of the new pipe.
The company said that the leak in the pipeline was reported by a maintenance team working 24 hours.
It said that NNT had reported the leak to the authority and senior leaders of the local community to avoid misunderstanding.
The company said that the crack was not caused by mistakes in the pipeline design but might be due to the damage in the rubber material of the pipeline.
The company added that it would continue to monitor the pipeline to avoid another crack. (*)
