Newmont reports higher copper, gold production from Batu Hijau

US mining giant Newmont Mining Corp. reported on Tuesday that copper and gold production from its Batu Hijau mine in Sumbawa island, West Nusa Tenggara increased due to higher mill throughput.

Third quarter 2010 copper production increased to 142 million pounds from 141 million pounds a year ago and cumulative 2010 copper production increased to 420 million pounds from 336 million pounds a year ago.

Third quarter 2010 gold production increased to 219,000 ounces versus 208,000 ounces a year ago and cumulative 2010 production increased to 554,000 ounces from 387,000 a year ago.

The company said in 2010 Batu Hijau is expected to produce 515-546 million pounds of copper and 638,000-720,000 ounces of gold.

Newmont currently has 48.5% economic interest at Batu Hijau. (alex)
