US giant miner Newmont Mining Corp. announced on Wednesday that copper and gold production from its Indonesian subsidiary PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara during the fourth quarter of 2001 reached 137.3 million pounds and 82,200 ounces at a cash cost of US$0.38 per pound of copper after gold credit.
The company said annual copper production for 2001 was 656,954 pounds, compared to previous year?s production of 520,781 pounds.
``Batu Hijau is one of the largest and lowest cost copper mines in the world. In 2001, it continued to demonstrate superb operating proficiency that surpassed our production and cash costs targets. The increases in copper and gold sold were the result of higher ore grades, an 18 percent increase in tons mined and 15 percent higher mill throughput from the year 2000,? said Wayne Murdy, Newmont Mining Corp.?s Chairman, President and CEO in a statement.
