Newmont to hold seminar on submarine tailing placement

Copper and gold mining company PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT), in cooperation with the West Nusa Tenggara provincial administration and the Mataram University, will hold a seminar on submarine tailing placement on Thursday.

The seminar will be held at the Sahid Hotel in the provincial capital of Mataram, Newmont said in a statement.

"The seminar is aimed to gain an objective perspective from exports on submarine tailing placement and related issues as well as to bridge the variety of information (on the matter)," the company said.

The seminar will feature Derek Ellis of the Victoria University in Canada, who is known as biologist and an expert in submarine tailing placement and its environmental impact; head of the ministry of energy and mineral resources' training and education center Surna T. Djajadiningrat, who is also known as a industrial and environmental expert and a lecturer at the Institute Technology of Bandung in West Java; LTX Lalementik, who is a marine biologist from the Sam Ratulangi University in North Sulawesi; Joh Pariwono, a marine expert from the Bogor Agricultural Institute in West Java; and George Polling, vice president of Rescan Environmental Services Ltd of Canada.

The seminar will be attended by governmental officials, legislators, academics, students, non-governmental organization activists, journalists, community and religious leaders, the company said in a statement.

The company said submarine tailing placement system has been implemented in several countries over the past two decades. NNT is one of the first companies to implement the system in Indonesia. (Bodega)
