Newmont told to help preserve forests in W Nusa Tenggara

West Nusa Tenggara Vice Governor HB Thamrin Rayes said here on Wednesday that PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) should help preserve forests in its mining operation areas in Indonesia, Antara reported Thursday.
"NNT must help preserve the environment, including the forests in its new operation area in Dodo village," said Rayes.
The unit of US mining giant Newmont Mining Corp.has been awarded a license to mine a new area in Dodo village, Plampang subdistrict, Sumbawa district.
"The forest area in Dodo village is included in NNT's work contract with the Indonesian government," he added.
He said the company is entering the exploration stage and has to build support facilities in the area but it must also maintain the environment.
"We hope it would help preserve the environment as a token of its moral responsibility," the vice governor said.(*)
