North Sulawesi authorities have urged gold miner PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (NMR) to clean away tailings from its gold mines and contribute more for the welfare of communities near its mining sites, local daily Manado Pos reported on Friday.
Minahasa regent Marlina Moha Siahaan, in her meeting with NMR officials recently, said the firm must make sure that tailings from its mining sites would be removed before the company ceases operation in the area in December 2003.
She added NMR must also provide electricity and scholarships for villagers near its projects.
NMR is 80 percent controlled by US giant miner Newmont Mining Corp.
It has planned to close its operation in North Sulawesi due to resource depletion.
Newmont also operates copper and gold mining firm PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) on the island of Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara. (*)
