The LPSM non-governmental organization demanded coal mining company PT Gunung Bayan Pratama Coal in East Kalimantan to stop transporting coal through the Sungai Kedang river because the vessels carrying coal created waves which damaged houses near the river.
The local Kaltim Post daily said that LPSM claimed to represent the people from five villages affected by GBPC coal transport.
The paper said that LPSM demanded GBPC to develop road as an alternative to the river transportation system. The road should be completed within 2 years.
It said that LPSM also demanded GBPC to pay a fee Rp 1,000 per ton of coal transported via the river. The collected funds could be used to help finance various programs of the villages.(*)
