The Yalam foundation, a local non-governmental organization, filed a legal suit against the Kotabaru administration and legislative council in South Kalimantan for receiving retribution funds from illegal coal mining in the regency.
The local Banjarmasin Post daily quoted Yalam chairman Noor Ipansyah as saying that the fund had been allocated into the 2000/2001 regional budget, which had been approved by the legislative council.
Noor said that by receiving the funds from the illegal miners, the local government was acknowledging the existence of illegal coal mining activity in the regency.
He said that according to the existing law, the administration should have curb illegal mining to protect local environment.
The paper said that the suit was filed at the Kotabaru court.(*)
