PT Nusantara Infrastructure Tbk, a publicly listed company mainly engaged in the operation of toll roads, plans to build two or three minihydro power plants next year as part of the company?s expansion program into the energy sector.

The company would spend up to US$30 million for the construction of the minihydro power plants which would have combined capacity of 15 megawatt, the company?s Managing Director Bernandus Djonoputro said last week.

He explained that the electricity to be produced from the minihydro power plants would be sold to state electricity company PLN.

?Next year, we plan to build two or three hydropower plants with capacity of 5 megawatt each. It will be the fourth business sector entered by the company after toll road, port, and water,? he was quoted as saying by Bisnis Indonesia daily.

He said that the company had sent a team to evaluate a number of locations for the development of minihydro power plants in Sumatra and Java. According to him, Nusantara Infrastructure is now finalizing a minihydro power plant project with a capacity of 10 MW in Sumatra. ?We hope it can be realized by the year end,? he added.(*)
