Oil spills into East Kalimantan's Mahakam waters

Part of the Pulau Layangan Island and its surrounding water in the Muara Jawa Tengah area of the Muara Jawa sub district, Kutai regency in East Kalimantan has been affected by oil spill of oil and gas firm PT Total Indonesie since last Saturday.

The oil spill incident occurred in the burn pit location of the Handil oil field.

Kompas quoted head of the Kutai office of the local environmental watchdog (Bapedalda) Rini Budi as confirming the incident.

But Rini said that efforts to clean up the 10,000 liter oil spill had nearly completed.(*)
