Ombilin mining site needs new investor in 2003

Tuesday, April 25 2000 - 02:30 AM WIB

The external mining activity conducted by the local traditional miners in the Ombilin mining site will have to end by 2003 because of exhausted coal reserves, according to president of the state coal mining firm PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam Soenardi.

Bukit Asam controls the Ombilin mining site. Local traditional miners have been allowed to mine part of the site.

Soenardi said on Monday that the company was seeking ways on how to allow the traditional miners to keep their mining activity beyond 2003.

He said that among of the alternatives is allowing the provincial-owned cement maker PT Semen Padang to invest in the Ombilin mining site. He said that Semen Padang could also invite other investors to participate.

Semen Padang is one of Bukit Asam's customers. (*)
