One more body found at Freeport?s mine
Saturday, November 15 2003 - 02:50 AM WIB
The victim was identified as 44-year old Warto, a bulldozer operator from Surabaya. Warto was one of the six persons who were missing in a landslide last month at Grasberg gold and copper.
Freeport?s manager for corporate communications Mindo Pangaribuan said that it took longer time to take out the decomposed body from the ill-fated mine.
?It (body) was found during the night. Moreover, they took it from hundreds of meters of depth in Grasberg mine,? Mindo said.
After reaching the surface, the body was identified by the Tambagapura Hospital and it was sent to Surabaya next day to handover the body to Warto?s family members.
Freeport said earlier that it will fulfill all its obligations to pay the compensation to victims as per the company rules.
The SAR team is still looking for the remaining missing victims ? Fredrikus Tokan, Agus Quilem, J Fiani Bolung and Suradi.
The government-appoointed investigation team blamed Freeport for the accident. The mine is still closed.
PT Freeport Indonesia is the unit of world mining giant New Orleans-based Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (*)
