One worker was killed and two others were injured in an accident at an oil rig in the Southeast Sumatra block in the Seribu islands offshore West Java owned by China?s oil and gas firm China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC)

Kuntjung Suyanto, the police chief for the Seribu islands area, said that the incident occurred following an explosion at the oil rig at around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Hariyanto, a spokesman of state oil and gas company Pertamina, confirmed the incident.

He said the incident killed a welding worker of CNOOC's sub-contractor PT Kimas Suplindo, identified as Mulyadi

"Pertamina is investigating the incident. Thus far, operation at the rig remains normal," Hariyanto said.

The block was previously operated by Spanish-Argentinean firm YPF-Repsol but last year CNOOC acquired the company?s stake in the block as well as six other blocks across Indonesia in a deal worth US$585 million. (Godang/Ari)
