One police officer killed in shooting incident near Freeport?s operations

Two police officers were shot by armed criminal group on Wednesday at Mile 69 in Tembagapura, Mimika Regency, Papua Province, near the mining operations of gold and copper giant PT Freeport Indonesia, Kompas.com reported.

The news portal said that one of the police officers died. The police officers were conducting patrol and investigation into an earlier shooting incident when they were ambushed. The shooting incident comes amid hostage crisis in Tembagapura, where separatist group took hostage of around 1,300 villagers.

According to Papua Police, there have been 12 shooting incidents by armed criminal groups since October 21, injuring 11 policemen, and killing one police officer. (*)
