One worker killed in PT Freeport mining accident

Gold and copper giant PT Freeport Indonesia said that an accident occurred on Monday at its Grasberg open pit mine in Papua Province, killing one worker, and injuring another, the latest incident in less than two months.

Riza Pratama, Spokesman of PT Freeport, a local subsidiary of US Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc, told Petromindo.com that the company?s command center received a report on Monday, 05.23 p.m., of the incident.

He added that the victims were rushed to the local Tembagapura Hospital and that the company has reported the incident to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. No further details were provided.

This is the latest mining incident at the PT Freeport mining operation in less than two months.

Late in August, a worker of PT Freeport was crushed to death on Tuesday by a wheel louder at the company?s mining compound in District Kuala Kencana, Timika, Papua Province.

In July of last year, one worker was killed during a work accident at its mine, and in January of last year one contract worker was killed. In February of this year, the company saw a landslide incident at its mine due to heavy rainfall, but no casualties were reported.
