Orica to spend $400m to build E. Kalimantan ammonium nitrate plant

World?s largest commercial explosives producer Orica Limited will start construction of its ammonium nitrate plant in Bontang, East Kalimantan in 2008 with commercial production seen at 2011.

Terry More, Country Director of PT.Orica Mining service, the Indonesian unit of Orica, said on Monday that the plant would have production capacity of 300,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate per annum. Ammonia for the plant would be supplied by East Kalimantan fertilizer maker PT.Pupuk Kalimantan Timur (PKT)

More said Orica would invest US$400 million for the plant.

He further said that Orica would use ammonium nitrate production from Bontang to replace import from Thailand and The Phillipines.

Included in Orica?s Indonesian customers are miners such as PT.Freeport Indonesia, PT.Kaltim Prima Coal. PT.Newmont Nusa Tenggara and several mining contractors. (bernard)
