Paiton to build new power unit

PT Paiton Energy has planned to build a new power generation unit at its power plant in Paiton, Probolinggo, East Java to bring the total power generation capacity of the coal-fired power plant to 2,000 Megawatt (MW), Kompas daily reported on Friday.
Paiton Energy?s senior director Syakib Bafagih said that the development of the 800 MW power unit would start in November this year and was expected to be completed in three years, the paper said.
The development of the new unit aims to meet the growing demand for power in Java and Bali, particularly East Java.
He said that currently power supplies in Java reached 7,000 MW, while demand in the province is expected to increase to 9,000 MW in 2010.
The firm has built two power units at the Paiton power complex, each with the power generation capacity of 600 MW, according to the paper.
Paiton Energy is a consortium of the United States, Javanese and Indonesian firms. (*)
