State-owned shipbuilding company PT PAL Indonesia will take part in the tender for the construction of a coal-fired power plant to be built in West Nusa Tenggara as part of the government's fast-track power plant development program, Bisnis Indonesia reported on Wednesday.

PAL's president director Adwin H. Suryohadiprodjo said in Surabaya on Tuesday that the company would form a consortium with state construction companies such as PT Wijaya Karya and PT Adhi Karya in bidding the 2 x 25 MW coal-fired power plant project which would be built at a cost of about US$50 million.

"The first step to enter the business will be made by taking part in the tender for the construction of the $50 million coal-fired power plant in West Nusa Tenggara," he said.

Adwin said that PAL Indonesia has secured financial backing from a local bank to enter the business.

PAL Indonesia is already experienced in constructing small-scale power plants and has the ability to manufacture some of the components such as condenser, turbine and heat exchanger.

Among its portfolios are coal-fired power plants in Tanjung Priok, Jakarta and Surabaya and gas-fired power plants in Cilegon, Banten and Muara Karang, Jakarta. (*)
