State electricity firm PLN still awaits government-owned oil and gas company Pertamina to supply electricity to South Sumatra Province where blackout has occurred more often, South Sumatra based Sumatera Ekspres daily reported on Friday.

The head of PLN?s Palembang office, Syafri, said on Thursday Pertamina and Palembang-based fertilizer maker PT Pusri Sriwijaya had agreed to help PLN reduce blackout and fulfill the rising demand for electricity in South Sumatra.

Based on the agreement, Pusri supplied 10 megawatts of electricity for consumers in the region using PLN?s transmission networks. Meanwhile, it remained unclear when Pertamina will follow suit, Syafrif said.

On Monday, over 100 protesters came to Palembang?s PLN office demanding it to soon provide them with electricity.

Blackout has also occurred in other areas in Sumatra due to troubled power plants and rising demand. (*)
