Papua said to buy stakes in PT.Freeport indonesia

The government of Papua on Thursday restated intention to acquire 15 percent stakes of the world?s largest copper and gold mining firm PT. Freeport Indonesia from parent company New Orleans- based Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc.

?I just have a talk with James Moffet, Freeport McMoRan?s chairman and CEO, and he basically had agreed that Papua province would acquire 15 percent interest in PT. Freeport Indonesia,? said Papua governor Jaap Solossa on a sideline of Fujian LNG contract signing in Jakarta.

Jaap, however refused to give further detail about the source of fund that will be used to acquire the stake or the timeframe for the acquisition.

Freeport Indonesia?s official in Jakarta when contacted could not comment on the matter.

Freeport McMoRan has 90.6 percent ownership interest in Freeport Indonesia. (arry/godang)
