Partial blackout may hit Java and Bali again

Partial blackout may hit Java and Bali again beginning today due to the halt in the operation of two power major plants, the eighth unit of the coal-fired Paiton power plant in East Java and sixth unit of the coal-fired Suralaya power plant in Banten.

State-owned electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara's (PLN) Corporate Secretary Supriyanto said in Jakarta Monday that Paiton's Unit 8 halted its operation on Monday due to a problem in its boiler system, reducing the power supply to the Java and Bali power grid by 600 megawatt (MW).

Suralaya's Unit 6 has also stopped operation since Monday due to the delay in the coal shipment, also reducing the power supply by 600 MW.

?The stoppage of the operation of two power plants has reduced the power supply by about 1,200 MW. There should be a partial blackout in some parts of Java and Bali to offset the power supply deficit,? he said.

In addition, the Cilacap power plant which has capacity of 2 x 300 MW is still unable to operate at full capacity, he said.

Supriyanto hoped that the partial power blackout would not last long as the coal supply problem for the Suralaya power plant could be overcome on Tuesday.

?We have not yet received information, whether Paiton could be operated again,? he said. (godang)
