State-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) said it has begun operating a multipurpose terminal at Pangkalbalam Port in the Bangka Belitung Islands to boost cargo handling, particularly for agricultural and plantation commodities.
The terminal is aimed at supporting regional economic growth and improving community welfare, A Yoga Suryadarma, general manager of Pelindo Regional 2 Pangkalbalam, said in on Sunday.
The facility comprises eight piers, serving a range of cargoes including fertilizer, cement, construction materials, rubber, palm kernel meal, shells and containers.
Pelindo operates the terminal through its unit PT Pelabuhan Tanjung Priok Pangkalbalam branch, which focuses on non-containerized cargo handling.

The company said the terminal is supported by infrastructure including a 649-metre dock, loading and unloading equipment and storage facilities, positioning it as a key logistics hub for the plantation supply chain in the province, particularly for palm oil and its derivatives.
Most agricultural and plantation cargo traffic on Bangka Island currently passes through Pangkalbalam Port, underlining its role as a gateway for the local economy, the company added.
Branch manager Alamsyah said the operator continues to introduce operational innovations to improve efficiency, safety and environmental performance, including in the handling of crude palm oil and related products.
