The Indonesian Mining Experts Association (Perhapi) has not yet formed an accreditation agency that could provide international professional certification to local mining engineers.

Perhapi secretary general Juangga Mangasi Mangunsong said that the necessary infrastructure to form such a council had already been prepared, but there was no indication it would be legalized in the near future.

Mangunsong said that international certification was important to the local mining professionals to anticipate the free trade area in 2003, which would allow overseas mining professionals to seek jobs here.

He said that the local mining professionals could face difficulty to compete with the overseas mining professionals because the latter had obtained international certification.

He also said that in the future, mining companies would require their mining engineers to have international accreditation. He said that such a standard would be demanded by customers and shareholders of publicly listed mining companies. (R. Amoros)
