State oil and gas company Pertamina was requested by the National Police on Tuesday to soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) so as to enable the latter to get 50 percent of fuel confiscated in special police operations.
National Police Chief Gen Da?i Bachtiar said the two parties had actually formulated the MoU, and that Pertamina had not yet stated whether it was ready to sign it.
The division of confiscated fuel between the two sides should be based on a MoU so as to guarantee public accountability, Bachtiar told reporters.
A kerosene shortage has hit many parts of Indonesia over the past two weeks following the government?s plan of raising fuel prices by between 20-25 percent this month. Speculators were suspected to have stockpiled the commodity and sell it following the fuel price hike. (leo)
