State oil and gas company PT.Pertamina Tbk said sales of unsubsidized gasoline Pertamax has increased dramatically from 400 kiloliters per day to 150 kilo liters in greater Jakarta area after the company reduce the gasoline price to Rp.6,800 (US$=Rp.12,300) from Rp.7,950 in October.

VP Retail Gasoline Marketing Denni Wishnuwardani said the increase was due to the fact that Pertamax price is almost on par with subsidized gasoline of Rp.6, 000 per liter. ?Pertamax has octane value of 92, while subsidized fuel only has 88. Motorists are now becoming more conscious about quality fuel,? she said.

She said Pertamina planned to extend its Pertamax sales points to outside Java and might import more from Singapore should the demand increase.

Currently Pertamax is produced in Pertamina?s Balikpapan and Balongan refineries with capacity of 300,000 kls per year.

Denni said that Pertamina might further lower Pertamax price to Rp. 6,500 per liter next month. (godang)
