Pertamina completes first injectivity test to support CCS development

PT Pertamina Drilling Services Indonesia (PDSI) has completed its first water injectivity test at the Jatibarang oil field in West Java, marking a step toward preparing carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects across the state energy company's upstream operations.
The test was carried out on July 14 at the JTB-156 well in the Jatibarang field, operated by PT Pertamina EP Regional 2 Zone 7, PDSI said in a statement.
The project involved collaboration among parent company PT Pertamina, upstream unit PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Pertamina EP Regional 2 Zone 7 and PDSI to evaluate reservoir suitability for future carbon dioxide injection.
PDSI Vice President of Business Development Dedi Damhuri said the company is expanding its support for CCS and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) projects through its Integrated CCS/CCUS Engineering, Supervisory & Services (ICESS) initiative, which provides engineering and technical services for carbon management projects within the Pertamina Group.
The water injectivity test also forms part of a waterflood optimisation programme using treated wastewater from the Balongan wastewater treatment plant.
According to Pertamina, data collected from the test will be used to assess the reservoir's ability to receive injected carbon dioxide and permanently store it, while also supporting enhanced oil recovery (EOR) programmes.
PT Pertamina Principal Specialist for Upstream Innovation and Low Carbon Dewi Mersitarini said the test involved injecting up to 600 barrels of water at pressures below the reservoir's fracture pressure over one to two days.
She said the results would provide analogue data to improve reservoir modelling and simulations, helping increase confidence in the formation's injection and storage capacity while reducing technical risks associated with future CCS investments.
Pertamina has identified carbon capture and storage as one of its key decarbonisation initiatives as Indonesia seeks to develop CCS hubs to reduce emissions from its oil, gas and industrial sectors.
