Pertamina EP mulls exploring shale gas

PT Pertamina EP Indonesia, a subsidiary of state oil and gas company PT Pertamina said it is currently assessing some of its working areas that may have shale gas potentials.
Syamsu Alam, President Director of Pertamina EP, told Petromindo.com that the company is conducting preliminary study on those working areas including laboratory analysis to determine whether those WKs contain shale gas.
"Pertamina EP is currently evaluating three areas, namely North Sumatera, West Java and Kalimantan," he said. He however declined to give estimate when the evaluation will be completed.
The result of the study is conducted before moving forward with seismic activities.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry on Wednesday announced that it has issued Ministerial Regulation No. 5/2012 on the procedure of offering non-conventional oil and gas working areas (WK).
The regulation is expected to stimulate development of non-conventional gas in the country such as coal bed methane (CBM) and shale gas.
