PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) has targeted to generate geothermal electricity up to 402 MW until the end of this year as part of its plan to support the government in increasing the use of geothermal and decreasing the use of oil fuels.

?PGE will continue to increase power generation from geothermal. It?s a long term but environmentally friendly business. It also supports the government?s plan to use renewable energy and decrease the use of oil fuels,? PGE President Director Slamet Riyadi said during the conference and exhibition of renewable energy, organized by the Indonesian Society of Renewable Energy (METI) from July 17 to 18 in Jakarta.

He pointed out that by 2014 PGE?s power generation from geothermal would reach 517 MW and then 837 MW or even 1,000 MW in 2015. ?Before 2020, we?re confident that we will generate up to 2,000 MW from geothermal,? said Slamet.

According to him, PGE has secured work areas for the geothermal development. ?We?ve already had work areas for the geothermal development. We?re now working on the birth of ten geothermal power plants (PLTP),? he said.

He noted that there were still obstacles in developing the PLTP. ?It?s particularly concerned with a protracting process of licensing and a legal certainty of risk exploration,? he said.
