State oil and gas company Pertamina has opened tender for the building of 12 oil tankers for its armada, company president director Baihaki Hakim said on Tuesday.

They were part of the 20 tankers currently needed by Pertamina, Baihaki said in a parliamentary hearing.

?I dream of witnessing more and more oil tankers with Indonesian flags in the future,? Baihaki said.

Earlier reports said that the 12 tankers were valued at around US$ 400 million, combined. They had been planned to be built by Indonesian shipyards including state owned PAL Indonesia, Dok Surabaya, Koja Bahana Jakarta, Dumas Surabaya, Duta Marina Indah, Intan Sekunyit Palembang and IKI Ujungpandang.

Pertamina plans to reduce its independence on chartered vessels which at present account for some 80 percent of its tanker fleet. (godang)
