Pertamina refinery produces propylene product

State-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina said its refinery in Plaju, South Suamtra, has started producing polypropylene product under the brand name of Polytam High Grade to help reduce the country?s import of plastics.

Pertamina Director of Processing, Toharso said in a statement Wednesday that the Polytam High Grade is a high quality propylene which is more resistant to heat and oxidation.

The Plaju refinery produces the polypropylene product at a rate of 4,000 tons per month to meet domestic demand for raw material in the production of plastics, and to help cut down the country?s import of plastic materials.

According to the Ministry of Industry, Indonesia?s plastic imports in 2015 totaled US$6.9 billion.

According to the Indonesia Sciences Institute (LIPI), Indonesia?s per capita of plastic consumption in 2016 reached 17 kg per year, with annual growth rate of 6-7 percent. The food and beverage industry is the largest consumer of plastics in Indonesia. (*)
