State owned oil and gas company Pertamina is set to almost double the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) for cars to Rp 3,000 per litter equivalent of premium fuel from Rp 1,550 at present, Investor Daily reported on Thursday.

Pertamina's general manager for domestic gas sales, Edwin Bakti said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the increase would be made as an adjustment to the rise in the price of gas to about US$5 per million British thermal unit (MMBTU).

He did not explain when the new price would begin effective, saying; "It will be quite soon."

According to him, Pertamina has 17 CNG stations in Jakarta but only eight are now in operation. He said that the use of CNG continues to decline from year to year with the demand reaching less than 200 litter equivalent at present. (*)
