State-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina through subsidiary PT Pertagas Niaga (PTGN) has started shipment of LNG to Ambon, the capital city of Maluku Province, which is the first LNG shipment made to the eastern part of the country.

Pertamina said in a statement obtained Tuesday that the LNG will be utilized by the City Center shopping mall in Ambon for power generation and air conditioning.

The LNG is supplied by oil and gas production sharing contractor Chevron IDD Bangka in Bontang, East Kalimantan. PTGN, in partnership with PT Aico Energi, then shipped the LNG using general cargo vessel from the Kariangau Port in Balikpapan to the Yos Sudarso Port in Ambon.

In each LNG delivery, the vessel caries four ISO LNG tanks with capacity of around 1,600 mmbtu, deemed enough to meet the shopping mall?s demand for eight days.

The statement said that LNG utilization trial, which started earlier this month, is still on going. ?The government is currently pushing for equal distribution of energy. If the response is positive, we?ll expand the LNG supply to other areas in the eastern part of Indonesia,? said PTGN President Director, Linda Sunarti in the statement.
